Many straightforward applications are filed without representation. Legal work makes a difference in cases with friction: inconsistent civil registry records; identifying which wording of the Nationality Law governs the case, since the 2026 amendments apply to procedures started on or after 19 May 2026 while procedures already pending on that date continue to be governed by Law no. 37/81 of 3 October, in its previous wording (article 7(2) of Organic Law no. 1/2026); the material requirements now applicable to grandchildren; judicial recognition of a de facto union; opposition brought by the Public Prosecutor under article 9 of the Nationality Law; or a refusal requiring an administrative or judicial response. Representation before the courts is reserved by law to lawyers admitted to the Ordem dos Advogados.

Working with a citizenship lawyer.

A lawyer is not legally required for most applications. Representation is particularly useful where civil records are inconsistent, where a grandparent route must satisfy the current material requirements, where a de facto union needs judicial recognition, or where the case involves opposition or refusal. It also matters which wording of the law applies: the 2026 amendments govern procedures started on or after 19 May 2026, while procedures already pending on that date continue to be governed by Law no. 37/81 of 3 October, in its previous wording (article 7(2) of Organic Law no. 1/2026).

Yes. With a power of attorney, a Portuguese lawyer can prepare, file and follow the application on your behalf. Portuguese registries and courts operate electronically, so your physical presence is only needed at specific moments, if at all, depending on the route.
Fees depend on the route and on the complexity of the case — a linear descent application and a contested naturalisation are very different pieces of work. After the initial consultation we set out a written scope and fee proposal before any commitment.
